The big changes on the new Xcent are on the outside. It gets a new, more aggressive looking front bumper that also holds an all-new, chrome-garnished grille. The instrument cluster does look dated now, but it’s easy on the eyes. However, Hyundai could have at least added a distance-to-empty and average fuel efficiency display to the MID with the facelift. An opportunity missed! Existing owners will immediately notice that the car gets new pure beige upholstery, which does make the cabin feel classier. What should have been added is adjustable headrests up front and height-adjustable seatbelts – things which wouldn’t add much to the cost, but would add a lot of convenience. Apart from that, though, the seats are quite comfortable for city driving and can support large frames well, albeit snugly.

Right from the Getz, we’ve seen Hyundai’s small cars make the best use of the cabin space available. Two six footers can sit one behind the other and the rear seat uses the car’s width well enough to free up just about enough shoulder room for three abreast. A middle occupant can be seated fairly comfortably, but only over short journeys. The fixed central head restraint is too small for adults and the rear AC console does intrude into the leg space. All four doors get adequate space for 1-litre bottles, with more room for knick-knacks too. Boot space remains the same at 407-litres and three medium sized bags can fit in with ease. However, larger suitcases can be a bit tricky, because the wheel arches do eat into the trunk space.

Technology

Features like automatic climate control and rear AC vents are carried on like before and as you’d expect, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system offered with the updated Grand i10 finds a place here too. The display is very easy to use and gets the added benefit of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Even the touch response is good and we found no issues with lag, while the addition of voice commands adds some more convenience. The automatic variant, which isn’t available with this screen gets a mobile phone dock atop the dashboard, which is a thoughtful touch.

You do have to take your eyes off the road to use the touchscreen, but it’s been well-integrated and doesn’t look like an aftermarket add-on. The Xcent is still expectedly feature loaded, but Hyundai has sliced off goodies like the auto-dimming interior rearview mirror and the cluster ionizer (keeps the air inside the car clean and odour free). These features certainly added to the Xcent’s value proposition, but their absence won’t be a deal breaker for most.

The Xcent car is powered by the new 1.2-litre diesel. It’s a three-cylinder engine that makes 75bhp. But, thanks to the additional torque compared to the older 1.1-litre engine, it hauls the Xcent around with more ease. It isn’t exactly quick. But, the improvement in drivability is significant. It makes driving the new car in the city and out on the highway a more relaxing affair.

The turbo lag is less pronounced, the throttle response is crisper and the car now requires less shifts to keep the desired pace. The new engine works best between 1,600 to 4,000rpm. Revving it higher is a bit pointless, as things only get louder with no meaningful increase in the rate of progress. The gearshifts meanwhile are short throw and precise and the clutch is light too, which works well in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

Given that Hyundai hasn’t bothered with other mechanical changes on the new Xcent, the ride and handling remains almost the same as before. The ride is still plush at low speeds, and with decent visibility and maneuverability, the Xcent makes for an easy car to live within the city. But, the soft suspension setup doesn’t cope very well with the increase in speed.

In terms of ride and handling, the new Xcent is pretty similar to the older car. So, the ride at low speeds is quiet and comfortable but it does get noisy and a bit harsh at higher speeds and over poor roads. The handling, thanks to the lack of connect from both the steering and the chassis in general, is not the most involving. The new Xcent will go around bends without feeling wayward or loose, yes, but it’s not something you look forward to like you would in the Amaze or even the Dzire.

Hyundai now offers dual front airbags as standard across the Xcent’s variant range. The top three variants also get rear parking sensors, while the top two get a reversing camera with the feed relayed to the touchscreen infotainment system. However, while ABS was a standard offering, it’s now limited to the range-topping SX and SX (O) grade. At the least, ABS should have been optional for the lower variants.

The suspension system is well equipped as well with the front axle getting a McPherson strut, while the rear axle is fixed with a torsion beam. It is integrated with an electric power assisted steering wheel, which is based on rack and pinion steering type. It has a minimum turning radius of 4.65 metres, which is good enough. For the top end variant, the XV Safety, an advanced braking mechanism is equipped, which consists of an anti-lock braking system with an electronic brake-force distribution and this is additionally supported with a brake assist as well. Honda BR V Overview

Rewind a couple of years. A conventional ‘badi gaadi’, the ‘big’ car everyone wanted, was a sedan. Now, however, preferences have clearly changed. Everyone wants to be seen in an SUV, sitting high off the ground and not give two hoots about the pothole-ridden roads.

Manufacturers are more than willing to oblige as well. Over the past few years, our market has been bombarded with compact and sub-compact SUVs, priced on par with the conventional three-box sedan. Honda is slightly late to the party with the BR-V. Nonetheless, it wants to take on established rivals, such as the Hyundai Creta and the Renault Duster. Well, can it? Let’s find out!

Honda BR V Exteriors

The design of 2016 Honda BR-V is based on the new Active-Solid Motion language which brings a sense of flow to make it look premium as well as add the necessary tough elements by giving it a bold exterior. The same is vindicated when the front profile is considered which is reminiscent of the Honda CR-V. This particular trait will work in favor of the BR-V for the target customer to strike an instant connect.

The sleek headlights along with the macho and solid chrome band flowing along the width consist of the upper half of the profile. A closer look also reveals the additional details connected to the grille like the smaller section underneath as well as the wire mesh between the front grille and the bumper. Again interestingly, the window line rises from the front wheel arches before dipping down under the B-Pillar and then again rising towards the rear profile giving both the front and rear windows greater visibility. The window outline is blackened while the ORVMs come in a two-tone finish with turn indicators embedded in it. There are bright aluminum finished roof rails as well. The ground clearance of the Honda BR-V is 201mm and it runs on 196/60 R16 tyres with machined alloys.

The rear quarter view too continues to look as inspiring as the front with a solid D-Pillar wrapped around the tail section. Even the subtle flair on the rear wheels is carried to the tail lid. It has to be the rear which earns more points for this one seeks inspiration directly from Honda Odyssey making it look totally international. Even the tail gate looks well proportionate to the overall design and has uniquely styled joint taillamps. The larger rear windshield makes it easy to maneuver the car in reverse. The registration display area is positioned at the lower section with a chrome garnish.

Honda BR V Interiors

Inside the Honda BR-V, the interiors again remind you of the one in Mobilio and Jazz with a similar layout and feel. Agreeably, Honda’s knack of maintaining its appeal by giving a stronger built quality and well trimmed interiors has always worked in all its cars and the same will be seen in this new crossover.

Firstly, getting inside is not difficult even for taller passengers as the larger front and rear doors guarantee good ingress and egress. The seats came in two versions, the first being rich quality leather and the second with premium fabrics. We expect the BR-V to sport the former as standard in their top end variant. The front row seats are comfortable and can be easily adjusted according to any size of passengers but then they aren’t wide enough which makes it a tight squeeze. Similarly, in the second row everything is acceptable and the larger window area also offers proper visibility but then passengers might have to fight it out in terms of space. There is a third as well but with a flatter profile, its best for kids and luggage.

Even though, conventionally, India has a liking for beige interiors but personally all-black finish has always been my favourite as they tend to make the cabin look a lot classier. On the BR-V, it is very straight cut and simple with the familiar layout of things. The steering wheel has controls to alter volume and change mode of entertainment while the instrumental cluster is simple triple-ring binnacle with a chrome surround. There is a gear shift indicator too located inside the tacho ring. One can access all information about the vehicle regarding trip readings, mileage and instantaneous consumption on the third screen.

The central console sports a touchscreen unit with navigation and Bluetooth compatibility. One can also stream music using a phone as well as connect via USB and Aux-In options. It also gets a piano black finish around the central area. Just below that is the air-conditioning system with automatic climate control but this one is not a touchscreen type like that in the Honda City and instead has conventionally styles buttons to operate with a digital temperature display.

In terms of practicality, there are multiple storage options like the twin cup holder on the central zone, pockets on door trims, glove box, one common pocket for the rear occupants and a large boot space. We do not have the exact quantity of bootspace as this was a prototype and not an actual production variant. Even then the boot space looked sufficiently large to accommodate multiple bags. Honda BR V Engine

The diesel SUV gets the 1.5-litre i-DTEC engine from the City. The unit is quiet at idling, but gets noisy post 2,000rpm and stays that way to its 4,000rpm redline. But, according to Honda, the NVH has improved compared to the Mobilio. And one can tell both at idle and when driving. The engine makes 99bhp of max power and 200Nm of peak torque. In the real world this means good pulling power even from lower revs. Only catch is to avoid slipping under 1500rpm to avoid the lag. Power is sent to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox which is a little notchy but the light clutch makes easy work of driving in traffic.

The petrol BR-V is powered by a 1.5-litre i-VTEC mill that belts out 118bhp of power and 145Nm of torque. This comes mated to a six-speed manual as well. But, additionally, there’s the option of an automatic, a CVT to be precise. This one too uses a front-wheel-drive layout. The petrol is quieter and more refined compared to the diesel. It revs well too and is best enjoyed when given the stick.

The Honda BR-V, for all its SUV posturing, still doesn’t lend high seating. Which isn’t bad given it is more comfortable as a result and because the visibility, particularly over the hood, is good, it never feels difficult to drive or manoeuvre. It is easy to live within the city helped by a relatively tight 5.3m turning radius. The steering is light and responsive and it also weighs up nicely at speeds. The ride is sorted too. It is firm but is absorbent at speed and doesn’t thud too much over poor roads either. And it manages unseen speed bumps and undulations well too. Straight-line stability again is commendable and the BR-V feels confident and completely home handling the fast sweeping corners too. To top it all, the brakes have good bite and progression and there’s ABS in this top of the line VX version for added reassurance.

With ARAI claimed fuel efficiencies of 15.4kmpl for the petrol and 21.9kmpl for the diesel, the car boasts of the best-in-segment fuel economy. Pretty impressive on paper. The figures in real world conditions will be clear when we do a thorough road test soon. First impressions suggest- it won’t be a tough task.

Honda BR V Riding

The BR-V’s ride is forgiving and absorbs most of the undulations our roads will ever throw at it. It is stiffly sprung, but not up to the point where the ride becomes jarring. At low speeds, the 210mm of ground clearance and the India-friendly suspension dismiss the potholes and broken roads without a hiccup. The ride is slightly bouncy at the second and third row but is tolerable for shorter journeys.

Handling has been the Japanese carmaker’s forte for long. The steering weight and feel are just about right. It is wonderfully light at low speeds letting you chuck the thing around with a finger. However, the turning radius is gigantic thanks to the length. Taking a U-turn is a task in itself. Other than that, the BR-V is sure-footed and doesn’t mind being thrown around a series of bends. There’s enough feedback that gives you the confidence to push it through the corners as well.

Braking duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front, and drums at the rear. Braking power is adequate and the SUV doesn’t nose dive a lot under heavy braking and manages to maintain its line as well. Safety is taken care of by dual airbags that are standard across the range.

Honda BR V Conclusion

Honda is a little late to the compact SUV party. But, the BR-V has its USPs, its pluses, which should have buyers consider it. Three rows of seating for one. Then you have efficient engines, utility, dynamics and a premium badge to sweeten the deal. However, do note, the BR-V cannot off-road, it doesn’t pack in as many features or exude the same aura of premiumness as the Creta. The decider now will be its pricing. If priced under the Duster and the Creta, and by a noticeable margin, the Honda BR-V is certainly worth it.

Grand Touring Injection or GTI has served as the Volkswagen performance moniker for over 40 years now, with its first model, the Golf GTI widely credited with starting the ‘hot hatch’ segment. The car’s ensuing success meant that, pretty soon, other VW cars bore the GTI moniker, including the Polo. And that’s where India got its GTI introduction; in November 2016 Volkswagen launched the fifth-generation Polo GTI, imported in the three-door format. And now, with the Polo GTI moving into its sixth-generation MQB platform, we head to Spain to see just how much of a step ahead it is.

Volkswagen Polo GTI Style

To a layman, the GTI will pass of as a regular Polo because the overall body line and stance has been retained. However, there are many differences on the GTI. First of all, you get just 2 doors and the doors themselves are a bit longer now. The front fascia gets an aggressive look with the sharply styled bumper and the extremely well-detailed full LED headlamps which look terrific. The grille also gets a red strip which passes on to the headlamps. There is a lovely GTI badge and the honeycomb design on the grille looks killer. The side profile is neat and clean but you do get sportier 16-inch Salvador wheels. The rear gets dual exhaust pipes along with a black applique on the bumper. The shape of the tail lamps is unchanged but you get a lot more detailing with LED bulbs on the GTI.

Volkswagen Polo GTI Space

The Volkswagen Polo GTI interior has sporty front seats with enlarged bolster and height adjustment, while the rear seats offer a 60:40 fold function. The seat trim covers are finished in fabric ‘Clark’ with GTI signature red colour strips and stitching. There is a sporty flat-bottomed leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel with ‘GTI’-inscribed red stitching and paddle shifters. The company engineers have provided a plethora of storage compartments in the hatch in the form of drawers under the front seats, sunglass, coins, card and pen holders inside the glove box, bottle holders in the front doors, map pockets at the back of the front seats, coat hooks at the rear, etc., to mention a few. The front centre console houses a 12 V outlet to charge your smartphone. It gets hill start assist, cooled glove box, start/stop system with generative braking, cruise control, climatronic air conditioning system and luggage compartment lighting. A music system with 6 speakers, and Aux-in, USB and Bluetooth connectivity is a standard feature on the hatch.

Volkswagen Polo GTI Performance

The 1.8-litre TSI unit in this car debuted in the Skoda Laura TSI and currently resides in the Octavia and Superb. In the GTI, however, it makes 12PS more and is a complete thriller! 192PS between 5,400rpm-6,200rpm and 250Nm of max torque between 1,250-5,300rpm are very impressive figures, but that’s just one side of the coin. It’s the way that power is delivered that makes this engine one of our favourites.

The power delivery is very crisp and linear. The tacho needle races to the redline, and there is no sudden surge as the boost kicks in. You expect to be shoved hard into the seat when you stamp on the accelerator pedal, but instead the car sprints ahead smoothly and keeps gathering pace at a very high rate. In fact, you have to be a bit cautious because the manner in which the car gathers pace is alarmingly deceptive. The speedo rises quickly in response to throttle inputs, and before you know it you are well past legal speeds. This is a seriously fast car, Vbox recorded 0-100kmph time of just 6.71 seconds, kind of fast! Volkswagen claims a top speed of 235kmph, and I’m confident this car will quite easily show that on the clocks.

Internationally, the car comes with the option of a 6-speed manual transmission and a 7-speed DSG. In India, however, we get the automatic transmission, and we aren’t complaining – the gearbox is an absolute gem. Shifts are precise and arrive just when you want them. Transitions through the gears are seamless, and you don’t feel any jerks during upshifts or downshifts. Select Sports mode and the shift points are moved to the redline. Shift to D and the motor calms down. The gearbox shifts still quickly and smoothly, but engine revs won’t get very high. But then again, this is the GTI, so response to throttle inputs are quick, even in this mode. Paddle shifts are standard, further boosting the involvement on a winding road.

The Volkswagen GTI has a precise steering but I would have liked the feedback to be slightly better. It is very precise though. The car stays planted at high speeds on straights but on roads with some uneven surfaces, there is a tad loss in composure. The suspension is also stiffly set which makes sure you get better body control while the ride quality gets affected slightly. However, the ride isn’t bad at all and the GTI still feels comfortable. Braking power is sharp thanks to the all 4 discs while the grip from the 215/45/16 tyres is also very good.

Volkswagen Polo GTI Conclusion

Actually, the question is ‘Will you be able to buy one?’ VW India is in a conundrum about launching the car here. The new GTI certainly has enough to justify a premium, compared to the current one, and it’s safe to say that it will certainly enjoy more attention. But with the Polo (and the GTI) now based on the new MQB platform, the question is: Do they import it, which would mean a high price, or delay the launch until the local MQB platform (MQB A0-IN) is developed? To maintain the continuity of the brand, VW could do both – begin with an import and then move to local assembly later.

So, if and when the Polo GTI does make it here, assuming it’s sensibly priced or you have really deep pockets, should you look at it? Yes, this is a hot hatch that deserves serious consideration. While it may look all too familiar, the interior is a step ahead of the previous one, it drives fast, the gearbox is super-quick and the handling is fun enough. This isn’t to say it’s a thrill-your- pants-off kind of ride; it’s actually quite rounded off to serve as a daily driver and the ample interior space, comfortable seats and decent equipment list will be a further draw.

So as things stand, the new Polo GTI’s got a lot going for it. VW just has to make sure it gets the pricing right, and, going by the brisk sales of the reduced price GTI, there’s a handy marker for that.

As before, it’s available with a 1.4-litre diesel, and 1.6 petrol and diesel engines, both with manual and automatic gearbox options. With this update, Hyundai has also trimmed the variant count from seven to five. Prices have changed but with feature additions, so has the value proposition.

Hyundai Creta Design

The Hyundai Creta gets a mid-life makeover and in its latest avatar comes across as a more handsome-looking car. Changes are more concentrated towards the front and as a result, you now get the signature cascade effect grille that looks more imposing. The projector headlight setup gets subtle tweaks as well and they no more house the LED DRLs. The lower part of the front bumper gets a faux silver skid plate that adds to the SUV appeal. At the sides, nothing much has changed save for the new 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels which have a new design. The rear looks identical to the pre-facelifted car except for the shark-fin antenna and the silver skid plate. The compact SUV is now available in two new colours – Passion Orange and Marina Blue.

Inside the cabin, the Hyundai Creta facelift comes with an equally stylish appearance as the exterior. It gets multifunction steering wheel, analog and digital display consisting large instrument cluster and a larger touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In terms of space it comes same as the pre-facelift version. However, the addition of the sunroof in higher trim, updated seat and upholstery material along with silver accents at various places increased the premium appeal of the SUV.

Hyundai Creta Engine

The Creta comes with one petrol and two diesel engines. All are offered with six-speed manual, while the petrol and bigger diesel are made available with a six-speed automatic also. Where the Hyundai crete excels is engine refinement. The Creta diesels are so quiet, it feels like a petrol engine. The engines on the Hyundai Creta are powerful and have good enough torque.

There is more than sufficient power at almost all engine speeds. This makes it a good option to consider as driving in city traffic or even on the highway is a breeze. In terms of performance, one can overtake with ease. There isn’t much of a need to downshift. The engine is a bit sluggish at low rpms, but that bandwidth is minimal. Hyundai had recently announced that there will be no all-wheel drive version for the Creta in India. It will continue to sell the front-wheel drive version, at least for the time being.

The petrol engine returns 15.29 kmpl of mileage. The 1.4-litre CRDi engine generates 21.38 kmpl of mileage, while the 1.6-litre diesel engine returns 19.67 kmpl and 17.01 kmpl for the manual and automatic variants respectively.

Hyundai Creta Riding

Hyundai also claims to have fine-tuned the suspension setup, although the difference isn’t substantial. The suspension is still on the softer side and does well at low speeds. While most of the bumps and potholes are dismissed easily, some sharp ones do manage to filter into the cabin. The steering also continues to be light and easy to use, but doesn’t give the sense of connect you’d want at high speeds. Also, high-speed ride feels soggy and doesn’t feel as settled or composed as what you’d get in the Renault Duster or Captur.

Marketed as a compact sports tourer, the first generation Mercedes-Benz B-Class was introduced way back in 2012 for just Rs 21.49 lakh. An amount unheard of, while talking about new Mercedes cars. And this move not only brought the premium German marque within the reach for many, but pretty much kicked the hornet’s nest, resulting in a blitzkrieg of compact luxury cars in India from every other luxury car makers present in India.

The hatchback, after receiving a few nips and tucks, is back as the 2015 Mercedes-Benz B-Class and is offered with the same reliable 120PS, 1.6-litre petrol engine and an upgraded diesel engine. We get behind the wheels of the C200 CDI powered with a new 2.1-litre motor, straddled with 26 horses more than the outgoing engine.

Mercedes Benz B Class Style

The B-Class is instantly recognisable as a Mercedes. Its face is similar to what you see in the new C-Class. There are projectors with LED rings around them, lending a premium note to the B. Move over on to the side and you can see the B-Class facelift is a tad longer than the older one. This is because the new car really is 34mm longer than the outgoing version. We would have preferred to have Mercedes give it sportier alloys than the ones you see here, especially they look a bit disappointing on this bright red sample we drove. Move over to the rear and you’ll find that the bumper is new and has a chrome strip which hides the tail pipe.

Mercedes Benz B Class Space

The cabin of the B-Class looks more upmarket now, thanks largely to the designers picking up some stuff from the new C-Class’ parts bin. Things like the new steering wheel and sporty instrument cluster come from the entry-level rear-wheel drive Merc while the infotainment screen is a new 7-inch unit with a higher resolution display, it also gets navigation and runs on the latest OS.

The finish of the cabin is top notch, exuding a feel of luxury and the vehicle also gets front parking sensors and a reverse parking camera. Other equipment includes 7 airbags, panoramic sunroof and the usual safety systems we have come to expect from Mercedes-Benz. There are no changes to the interior dimensions and as has been the case with the B, there is ample amount of room inside the cabin to seat four people in comfort. Mercedes Benz B Class Performance

Mercedes-Benz B-Class comes with both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol engine of B-Class 180 Sport has a displacement of 1595 cc that produces a maximum power of 90 kW with a peak torque of 200 Nm. The B200 CDI Sports engine that runs on diesel has a displacement of 2143 cc and produces maximum power of 100 kW and maximum torque of 300 Nm. Both the variants come with a 7G Dual Clutch Transmission system that has two sub-transmission systems. The manual gearshift feature comes with steering wheel shift pedals giving an easy and smooth gear shift options to the driver. But for the traditional drivers who like their one hand on the transmission panel, there will be a difficulty in the starting to understand the gears.

The performance of Mercedes Benz B Class is as good as the other Mercedes cars. The top speed of Petrol variant is 200 km/h and for diesel variant it is 210 km/h that is acceptable for a small compact car.
