Hyundai Xcent Overview
Hyundai’s first offering for the compact sedan segment in India was the Accent Viva which was launched very long back. As the market hadn’t matured properly then, the Accent Viva didn’t sell in good numbers despite the regular Accent selling really well back then. The Korean automaker then introduced the Xcent in 2014, which is based on the Grand i10 and this compact sedan has been a good seller for Hyundai. The vehicle has now got a mid-life facelift following the Grand i10 so let us find out what additional things does the Xcent now offer.
The Hyundai Xcent has good demand with private buyers and excellent demand with the commercial fleet segment. To differentiate between these two, Hyundai will offer the facelifted Xcent only to private buyers while fleet operators will get the older Xcent in a stripped down version. Hyundai Xcent Exterior & Look
The current Xcent was launched at the 2014 Auto Expo and it got its facelift in 2017. The new car should have an all-new platform that will beshared with Kia Motors. This new platform will be wider, offer longer wheelbase and will be more flexible. The 2020 Hyundai Xcent will offer more features and new, better-performing engines too. This car is also going to be made keeping in mind the Hyundai Xcent 2019’s export to South America and other regions.
The wheels on the car will be functional. The front grill will see a slight change. The front portion of the car will resemble the Grand i10 Nios. All these changes will make the car look sharp and its road presence will become better. It will continue to have big windows which make the car feel spacious.
The Xcent should get more in line with the current design language in Hyundai cars. We will see sleeker, crisper lines and reduced bulges. We could see things like projector headlamps and LED tail lamps from its elder brother, the Verna, make their way onto this car. With width increasing and a more proportionate stance, tire sizes could go up to 16-inches. There might be even a good chance that the keyless-entry-system will come offered on lower models.
Hyundai Xcent Interior & Comfort
We expect the cabin to be very fresh with a lot of hand me downs from the Verna and Elantra. We hope to expect features like ventilated seats and a sunroof come through in this update. But features like wireless charging wouldn’t be bad. If there is an automatic coming with the 2020 Hyundai Xcent it could be possible that it gets paddle-shifters behind the steering wheel. Added features that will make it great would be cruise control, something the Honda Amaze gets but not the class-leading Maruti DZire.
Seat fabrics will get better and so will the material. We hope to see a good interior done in piano black with none of the cars in the segment having one. We can expect leather seats to come as an option and also an increase in airbags. The only compact sedan to have 6 airbags as of now is the Ford Aspire. There will be a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The center console will have a bigger touchscreen and the update will have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other normal features like automatic climate control, a cooled glovebox and loads of storage features should come without saying with the 2020 Hyundai Xcent.
Hyundai Xcent Engine & Transmission
It’s the thing under the hood that makes the real difference in terms of driving pleasure. The company has tweaked the engine line-up for maximum performance. The 1.2L U2 CRDi diesel engine is now capable of making 75PS, (3PS more) and 190Nm (10Nm extra) of torque. The transmission duties are handled by 5-speed manual gearbox. The automatic diesel version is still much demanded. For more details on Hyundai Xcent visit Midasedu
The petrol engine is the 1.1L Kappa Dual VTVT motor which produces 83PS and 114Nm of max torque. The petrol version can be availed in either 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. The noise and vibration levels in the petrol driven Xcent has been refined which makes it behave well on roads. The diesel version with high power and torque capacity now gives improved driving experience. The best way to drive the car is to choose the moderate sweet spot and you can feel the strong and effortless driving on the go.
Hyundai claims that the new Xcent returns improved mileage figures as the engines have been improved. Where the diesel powered variant delivers ARAI certified mileage of 25.4kmpl, the petrol version, on the other hand, reads 20.14kmpl. The petrol automatic is though, a little low, returning 17.36kmpl.
Hyundai Xcent Ride & Handling
The Hyundai Xcent has a soft suspension setup which results in a smooth ride for the passengers. The setup is slightly stiffer compared to the Grand i10 but the ride remains supple most of the times. However, uneven road surfaces tend to unsettle the car easily. On straights, the Xcent remains stable even at speeds well over the ton. The steering is feather light which is a boon in traffic and while parking but it lacks any sort of feel or feedback. It doesn’t even weigh up at high speeds and doesn’t instil confidence. Braking performance is sharp like other Hyundai cars and the grip from the tyres is average
Hyundai Xcent Braking & Safety
Braking has never been a problem in Hyundai cars and Xcent is no exception. The responsibility of braking lies on the disc brakes at the front and drum at the rear. The braking system does its job quite judiciously with strong bite force. Looking at the growing safety concerns as well as the competition among the peers, the carmaker has decided to give dual airbags as standard fitment in the car. However, it would have been better to have included ABS as a part of standard safety feature to keep pace with the competition. Nevertheless, the ABS, rear parking sensors, engine immobilizer, central locking, keyless entry and front fog lamps, all can be availed in higher models.

Hyundai Xcent Conclusion
The Hyundai Xcent is a well-rounded compact sedan because it offers excellent efficiency with the diesel engine, good performance, equipment and comfort. It is backed by Hyundai’s huge after-sales network. The Xcent doesn’t really have any major downsides except the handling part and is a very good contender in the compact sedan segment and the pricing of the car is attractive enough too.
Hyundai Xcent is offered in six different variants namely E, E+, S, S (AT), SX and SX (O). Talking about the pricing details, Hyundai Xcent’s base trim has been tagged at Rs. 5.54 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 6.42 lakh for the diesel trim. Its top ranging model gets the price tag of Rs. 7.65 lakh for petrol and goes up to Rs. 8.58 lakh for the diesel one. The top-selling variant 1.2 VTVT S trim is tagged at Rs. 6.5 lakh. The updated Xcent has really upped the game against Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, Volkswagen Vento and Tata Tigo in the space, where it has been finding hard to make its place for a couple of years.
